Who Owes What?
Free expense sharing calculator
After a group trip or dinner, working out who owes what is surprisingly fiddly. Different people paid for different things, the amounts never divide evenly, and someone always forgets what they put in.
This calculator does the maths for you. Add everyone's name, enter the total each person paid across the whole event, and it produces a simplified settlement plan — the minimum number of bank transfers to make everyone square. Free, instant, nothing stored.
1 Who was in the group?
2 Who paid how much in total?
Enter the total each person paid across the whole event. Leave at 0 if they paid nothing.
⚠️ This calculator assumes all costs are shared equally. If some people didn't join every expense — "I didn't have the calamari" — the Tallykins app handles per-expense splits properly.

How it works
What does this calculator actually do?
It works out how much each person should have paid (total ÷ group size), then figures out who is owed money and who owes money. It produces the smallest possible number of bank transfers to settle all debts — so nobody is making unnecessary payments.
What's the difference between this and the Tallykins app?
This tool works for a single event where everyone has already totalled up what they paid. The Tallykins app lets you log individual expenses as you go, handle different amounts per person per item, manage multiple events, and sync with friends in real time — useful for anything more involved than a one-off tally.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. Everything runs entirely in your browser. No names, amounts, or results are ever sent to a server or stored anywhere.
What if people paid different amounts for different reasons?
This calculator assumes all costs are shared equally across the whole group — it divides the total by the number of people and treats everyone's fair share as identical. If some people weren't part of every expense (different room types, someone skipped an activity, the classic "I didn't have the calamari"), the equal-split assumption will give you a wrong result. The Tallykins app handles per-expense splits — you log each cost individually and choose exactly who it's split between. Download free on the App Store or Google Play.
